Guide Dogs WA believes in the fundamental power of a Guide Dog to transform the life of people who are blind or vision impaired. It is the power of a dog to transform that inspires us to raise the $50,000 that is needed for the two years of training each Guide Dog needs, and it is that look of amazed independence that comes from every person who receives their dog that keeps a smile on our face.
Guide Dogs WA is run by VisAbility, formerly the Association for the Blind WA, and we raise every cent of the funds needed to train each dog through the generosity of the community, individuals, families and businesses.
We believe in everybody benefiting from a guide dog, and so every Guide Dog is provided free of charge to people who are blind or severely vision impaired. The trouble is that we don’t have enough dogs trained to meet the need, and we want to see that change. We want a world where everybody who needs a dog, has a dog.
Guide Dogs WA is the birthplace of Guide Dogs in Australia. Guide Dogs were first brought to Australia by Arnold Cook, a visionary Western Australian who also happened to be blind. If you want to know more, we’ve got more of about history, what’s involved in receiving a Guide Dog and how you can help us support others.
